Abstract

In the context of war and post-war recovery in Ukraine, the role of the concept of sustainable development is increasing as a decisive factor in shaping the environmental competence of learners who are capable of acting consciously to preserve the natural environment and use resources rationally. The article emphasizes the crucial role of education in this process. One of the key and priority directions for the development of the general secondary education system in Ukraine is the competency-based approach, which, in turn, serves as the methodological foundation of the modern educational process.

The purpose of the article is to provide a theoretical substantiation of the essence, structure, and methodological foundations for the development of environmental competence, as well as to identify the social and pedagogical factors influencing its formation among learners in the context of contemporary challenges of sustainable development.

The priority role of environmental competence as an integral characteristic of an individual is defined. Its main structural components are traditionally identified as interconnected cognitive, value-motivational, activity-practical, and reflective components.

General didactic principles (scientific validity, systematicity and consistency, integrativity, accessibility, and practical orientation) as well as specific principles (environmental-pedagogical: sustainable development, interdisciplinarity, nature conformity, environmental expediency, anticipatory education, and regional relevance) for the development of a sustainable ecological worldview are outlined.

It is proven that the formation of environmental competence is a complex, multi-stage, and long-term process that requires a holistic approach to teaching, upbringing, and personal development of learners, and is determined by the influence of a wide range of both social and pedagogical factors.
