Abstract

The article deals with the analysis of representative studies by Ukrainian scholars on the problem of reforming higher education abroad to identify achievements, bottlenecks, and prospects for its further study. The characteristic features and peculiarities of the historiography of the problem raised were shown. Its interdisciplinary nature is manifested in studies prepared in the fields of philosophy and philosophy of education, administration and management, economics and finance, law, education and pedagogy, in particular, comparative pedagogical studies. Structurally, this historiography is syncretic, as it absorbs studies in which the reform of higher education abroad is studied as a separate scientific problem and aspectually as a component of the main subject of research.

Representatives of various fields of knowledge have developed scientific and methodological principles for studying the process of reforming higher education in Ukraine and abroad. In a synthesized form, the scientific and methodological approaches developed by comparativists to the study of the development of higher education in foreign countries and in the global and European context focus on determining the criteria for their periodization and development factors; clarifying the strategic, tactical, operational goals of reform, etc.

Representative works that reflect the main thematic vectors of the historiography of reforming and modernizing higher education systems abroad were systematized and characterized: country studies; «regional-European»; «Ukrainian-European integration»; component (higher education as a component of reforming national or European school education systems); professional-industry (reforming individual branches of professional training); managerial, financial-economic, etc. The works of the first and second vectors are thematically analyzed through the prism of comparing studies that have a similar subject of research and present original methodological approaches to studying the processes of reforming higher education systems abroad.
